Italy

Livia Bellina graduate as a Medical Doctor in 1979 and works for the National health System since 1987. In 2008 to confirm a diagnosis of malaria in a migrant landed in Lampedusa Island, she discovered the possibility to take pictures directly from a microscope with a mobile-phone. Since that pioneering experience she decided to devote time and energies to the development and application of m-health in the most remote areas of the world. With that aim, in 2010 she founded MobileDiagnosis (MD). She further developed and promoted the MD method through extensive testing in rural underserved and poor villages of Uganda, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Madagascar, DRC and Thailand bordering Myanmar, India Assam and Nepal, also providing educational support and guidance on the use of mobile technology. In Bangladesh, upon invitation of Professor Muhammad Yunus, the MD method the idea was born to use a social business model to make the methodology and its applications available and sustainable in rural and low resource settings contexts. Based on experience she is now engaged in enhancing the educational potential of MD through the App MeToo. Next goal : the Welfare Islands.
